Key takeaways
- Queenstown Airport (ZQN) has the most suppliers and usually the lowest prices; downtown, Frankton and hotel delivery suit stays where you only need a car for part of the trip.
- Our booking data puts the average daily rate at about NZ$17 in May and NZ$50 in December.
- Booking 90+ days ahead averages about NZ$20/day, versus about NZ$40/day in the final week.
- Most suppliers rent from age 21 (some from 18), with a young-driver fee under 25.
- Compare the excess and bond, not just the daily rate — a typical excess is NZ$3,000–4,000.
Do you need a car in Queenstown?
If you are staying in central Queenstown for a couple of days, you can manage with buses, the gondola and walking. A car becomes essential the moment you want to see the region: Arrowtown, Glenorchy, Wānaka, the Gibbston wineries and the long drive to Milford Sound are all far easier — and often cheaper for two or more people — with your own wheels.
Tours work well for one-off trips such as Milford Sound, but a rental car lets you stop where you like, start early to beat the crowds and change plans when the weather turns. Read our best road trips from Queenstown for ideas.
Where to pick up your rental car
Queenstown has four main pick-up options. Each suits a different kind of trip:
| Pick-up point | Best for | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Queenstown Airport (ZQN) | Most visitors | Largest choice; desks in arrivals or a 2–5 min shuttle |
| Frankton | Budget suppliers | Depots near the airport; free shuttle from arrivals |
| Downtown Queenstown | Town stays first | Fewer branches; parking in town is limited |
| Hotel delivery | Convenience | Car brought to your accommodation, for a fee |

How much does car rental in Queenstown cost?
Prices follow the seasons. Across recent VIPCars bookings, the average daily rate was lowest in May (about NZ$17) and highest in December (about NZ$50), with the July ski-school holidays pushing winter rates up. Our cheapest time to rent guide has the full month-by-month picture.
When you book matters almost as much as when you travel. Booking 90 days or more ahead averaged about NZ$20/day, compared with about NZ$40/day for bookings made in the final week. Longer hires usually cost less per day too — a long-term rental of four weeks or more can cut the daily rate considerably.
Which car should you rent?
Match the car to your plans, not just the price:
- Mini (Chevrolet Spark or similar) — one or two people staying around town.
- Economy (Toyota Yaris or similar) and Compact (Mazda Demio or similar) — couples and day trips to Arrowtown or Glenorchy.
- Standard (Toyota Prius or similar) — long drives with luggage; the hybrid keeps fuel costs down.
- SUV (Toyota RAV4 or similar) and 4WD / AWD (Mitsubishi Outlander AWD or similar) — families, ski gear and winter alpine roads.
- Van / Minivan (Toyota Previa or similar) — groups of six to eight.
- Electric (Tesla Model Y or similar) — the Queenstown–Cromwell–Wānaka triangle, with fast chargers in each town.

Licence, age and payment
- A current, full driver licence. Overseas licences are valid in New Zealand for up to 12 months; if yours is not in English, carry an approved translation or an International Driving Permit.
- Most suppliers rent to drivers aged 21 and over, and some from 18. Drivers under 25 usually pay a young-driver fee, and some car groups (vans, luxury cars) need drivers aged 25+.
- A credit card in the main driver's name for the bond, usually NZ$200–500. Some local suppliers accept debit cards — check before you book.

Insurance, excess and the bond
Every rental includes basic insurance, but with an excess — the amount you pay if the car is damaged — typically NZ$3,000–4,000. Suppliers sell excess-reduction cover at the desk; compare that daily cost with standalone excess insurance before you travel.
Read the restrictions too. Many agreements exclude ski-field access roads, some unsealed roads and famous gravel routes such as Skippers Road, and damage on an excluded road is not covered at all.
Fuel, charging, parking and tolls
- Fuel: most rentals are full-to-full. Frankton has several fuel stations two minutes from the airport.
- Charging: EVs can fast-charge in Frankton, Cromwell, Wānaka and Te Anau. Charge fully before the Milford Road.
- Parking: central Queenstown parking is limited and mostly paid. Ask your accommodation about parking before you book a car for town-only days.
- Tolls: there are no toll roads in the South Island.
One-way rentals and returning the car
Not coming back to Queenstown? A one-way rental to Christchurch or Dunedin is popular — expect a one-way fee on top of the daily rate. Our Queenstown to Christchurch guide covers the route.
For an airport return, allow extra time between 4pm and 6pm when the Frankton roundabouts are busy, refuel nearby and photograph the car in the return bay.
