Driving the Crown Range in Winter: A Safe Guide

Is the Crown Range Road safe in winter? Snow chains, ice, which car to rent and when to take the Cromwell route between Queenstown and Wānaka instead.

Key takeaways

  • The Crown Range Road is New Zealand's highest sealed through road, at about 1,076 m.
  • From May to September, carry snow chains and know how to fit them.
  • Inexperienced winter drivers should take the longer, lower route via Cromwell.
  • AWD helps with grip but does not replace chains.

What makes the Crown Range different

The Crown Range Road links the Wakatipu Basin with the Cardrona Valley and Wānaka. At about 67 km it is the shortest route from Queenstown to Wānaka, but it climbs a series of tight switchbacks to a summit of around 1,076 m — the highest sealed through road in New Zealand. See our Crown Range road trip guide for stops along the way.

In winter, snow and ice can settle on the road quickly, especially on shaded corners and near the summit.

Snow chains: when and how

From May to September, carry chains whenever you plan to cross the Crown Range and practise fitting them before you need them. Most suppliers rent chains for a small fee — ask at the desk, or read our guide to snow chains for rental cars.

  • Fit chains to the driving wheels when signs say so, or when the road is white.
  • Keep speed low (around 40 km/h) with chains fitted.
  • Remove them once the road is clear to avoid damage.
If you are unsure on the morning, take Cromwell. You lose 15 minutes and gain a much easier drive.

Which car to rent

An SUV or AWD / 4WD gives better traction and ground clearance, but it does not replace chains — signs still apply to every vehicle. Smaller cars are fine in summer.

The alternative: via Cromwell

The route via the Kawarau Gorge and Cromwell is about 115 km and takes around 1h 25m. It is lower, wider and the recommended winter route for drivers unfamiliar with alpine roads — see Queenstown to Wānaka via Cromwell. Even this route can have black ice in the gorge on cold mornings.

Before you set off

Check road conditions on the morning you travel, leave with a full tank (there is no fuel on the pass), and give yourself daylight — sunset in June and July is around 5pm.

Road manners on the pass

  • Use the slow-vehicle bays to let queues pass — there are few overtaking opportunities.
  • Do not stop on hairpin bends; use the signposted lookouts.
  • Use a lower gear on the long descent to Arrow Junction rather than riding the brakes.
  • Watch for cyclists in summer and graders or gritting trucks in winter.

What to pack for a winter crossing

  • Snow chains that fit your car, plus gloves and a torch for fitting them.
  • Warm clothes, water and snacks in case of delays.
  • Sunglasses — low winter sun on snow is dazzling.
  • A charged phone; coverage is patchy near the summit.

When the road is restricted or closed

After heavy snow, the Crown Range may be restricted to chains only, 4WD with chains, or closed until it has been cleared. Restrictions can change within hours, so check road status before you leave and again before turning off at Arrow Junction. If in doubt, take the lower route through the Kawarau Gorge — it adds about 25 minutes. Our driving in Queenstown in winter guide covers the other alpine roads in the region.
