Key takeaways
- Many rental agreements exclude ski-field access roads from insurance.
- An SUV or AWD with a ski rack and chains is the most practical choice.
- For a whole season, monthly rental cuts the daily rate.
- Ski shuttles from Queenstown avoid the access-road question entirely.
Ski-field roads and your rental agreement
Ski-field access roads around Queenstown and Wānaka are steep, winding and can be partly unsealed. Many rental agreements exclude them from insurance cover, chains or not. Check the terms on each supplier page — we flag the ski-road policy for every company — or use a ski shuttle from town.
Which car to rent
An SUV or AWD / 4WD gives more grip and room for gear. Ask for a ski rack when you book, and add snow chains for the whole hire.
Take the ski shuttle up the mountain and use the car for everything else — it is simpler and keeps you inside your rental cover.
Staying for the season
If you are in Queenstown for a month or more, a monthly rental or long-term rental is usually much cheaper per day than back-to-back weekly hires, with servicing included.
Driving to Wānaka for Cardrona or Treble Cone
The Crown Range is the short way to the Wānaka ski areas but can be icy — read our Crown Range winter driving guide before you go.
Ski fields near Queenstown and Wānaka
| Ski area | From Queenstown | Access road |
|---|---|---|
| Coronet Peak | ≈ 25 min | Sealed, steep |
| The Remarkables | ≈ 45 min | Steep, winding, partly unsealed |
| Cardrona | ≈ 1 hr (via Crown Range) | Steep mountain road |
| Treble Cone | ≈ 1 hr 30 min | Steep, unsealed |
Times are approximate in good conditions. Check each field's road report on the morning you go — chains are often required.
Getting up the mountain without your rental car
Ski shuttles run from central Queenstown and Frankton to Coronet Peak and The Remarkables, and from Wānaka to Cardrona and Treble Cone. They are the simplest way to stay within your rental agreement, and you avoid the car-park queues. Use the car for everything else: the drive to Wānaka, a rest-day trip to Arrowtown or Glenorchy, and evenings out.
