Why prices change through the year
Car rental in Queenstown follows tourism demand. Prices peak over Christmas and January, when New Zealand and Australian families are on holiday, and stay high into February. They fall after Easter and bottom out in May, between the summer and ski seasons. The July school holidays and the start of the ski season lift winter prices, and spring is good value until demand builds again in November.
Cheapest car types
A mini (Chevrolet Spark or similar) or economy car (Toyota Yaris or similar) has the lowest daily rate, but a standard hybrid such as a Toyota Prius can cost less overall on long road trips because it uses so little fuel. In winter, SUVs and AWD vehicles are the first to sell out, so book them furthest ahead.
