1. Queenstown to Glenorchy
The 46 km road to Glenorchy hugs Lake Wakatipu, with the Humboldt and Richardson mountains ahead. Stop at Bob's Cove, the Bennetts Bluff lookout and the red boatshed on Glenorchy wharf. Read the full Glenorchy scenic drive guide.
Do the shorter drives first. An easy run to Arrowtown or Glenorchy on day one gets you used to keeping left before the long Milford or Mount Cook days.
2. Queenstown to Arrowtown
Just 20 km away, Arrowtown is a restored gold-mining town with a tree-lined main street, a Chinese miners' settlement and riverside walks. It is spectacular in autumn (April–May). Combine it with the Gibbston wineries for an easy half day.
3. Queenstown to Wānaka
Take the Crown Range — New Zealand's highest sealed through road at 1,076 m — via Cardrona, then return the lower way through Cromwell and the Kawarau Gorge. Our Queenstown to Wānaka by car guide compares both routes.
4. Queenstown to Milford Sound
The headline drive: 287 km each way via Te Anau, the Eglinton Valley and the Homer Tunnel. It is a long day, so many visitors overnight in Te Anau. Should you drive or take a tour? See Queenstown to Milford Sound: drive or tour?
5. Queenstown to Te Anau
A relaxed two-hour drive south through Kingston and Southland farmland to the lakeside town of Te Anau. Visit the glow-worm caves, walk part of the Kepler Track, or continue to Manapōuri for Doubtful Sound cruises.
6. Queenstown to Kingston
A quieter road along the southern arm of Lake Wakatipu, with the Remarkables on one side and the lake on the other. It is a gentle introduction to driving in New Zealand and the first leg of the drive to Te Anau.
7. Queenstown to Central Otago
Head through the Kawarau Gorge to Cromwell, then on to Clyde and Alexandra. Expect stone fruit stalls in summer, Pinot Noir cellar doors and the start of the Otago Central Rail Trail. It is about 90 km to Alexandra.
8. Queenstown to Aoraki / Mount Cook
Cross the Lindis Pass and follow the turquoise shore of Lake Pukaki to Aoraki/Mount Cook Village, about 260 km away. The Hooker Valley Track is an easy three-hour return walk to a glacier lake. Stay the night — the drive back is long, and the stargazing is superb.
Choosing a car for these trips
A compact car handles every route in summer. For winter trips over the Crown Range or to Milford Sound, an SUV or AWD with snow chains is more comfortable — see driving in Queenstown in winter. For a longer loop, read the best rental cars for a South Island road trip.
