Think about luggage first
South Island road trips usually mean big suitcases, and the most common mistake is booking a car that is too small. As a guide, a compact car takes two large cases, a standard hatchback or SUV three, and a minivan four or more with all seats in use. If you are carrying ski gear or hiking packs, size up.
Book one size up from what you think you need. On a two-week road trip the extra few dollars a day buy a lot of comfort, and luggage always grows.
Fuel economy on long distances
Distances add up quickly: Queenstown to Christchurch is about 480 km and a loop via the West Coast is well over 1,500 km. A hybrid such as the Toyota Prius uses roughly half the fuel of a large SUV, which can save a meaningful amount over two weeks. Fill up when you can in remote areas — towns can be 100 km or more apart.
Driving electric in the South Island
Fast chargers are now found in most South Island towns, including Queenstown, Cromwell, Wānaka, Te Anau, Dunedin and Christchurch. Plan charging stops on long, quiet stretches such as the Haast Pass and the West Coast, charge fully in Te Anau before Milford Sound, and expect less range in cold weather. Winter road trips
From June to September, an AWD SUV with snow chains is the safest choice for alpine passes such as the Crown Range, the Lindis Pass and the Milford Road. Read driving in Queenstown in winter and do you need a 4WD or SUV? before you choose.
One-way trips and the Cook Strait ferry
Many South Island trips start in Queenstown and finish in Christchurch or Dunedin. A one-way rental adds a fee but saves a long drive back — see our Queenstown to Christchurch one-way guide. Heading to the North Island? Many suppliers do not allow their cars on the Cook Strait ferry; instead, you drop the car in Picton and collect another in Wellington. Check before you book.
